Commission Challenge – Design and develop a redeploy able mini-golf course with an inventive twist for all ages.
Result – One of 8 holes dubbed “Mountain Gates” devised with a playful take on perception and minimalist simplicity. This artistic and playful commission / obtacle for the Knockdown Center, is constructed out of of rotating oak sticks, leading to an infinitely dynamic and configurable course. Guests can rearrange the stick or approach the course as it stands. Estimates at a par 4, it is naturally possible to get it in 1.
The revolving sticks themselves have a phonetic quality that is heard upon a golf ball’s impact, while the pressure packed dust base and obstacles are intended to withstand a variety of weather conditions and immature dabbling. Most notably, the quality of stepping off gravel and walking on this surface can best be describes as ‘walking on the moon’, essentially shifting one’s mood to a more relaxed state.
“Built in 1903, Knock Down Center was a glass factory and then a door factory. Now it is an impressive anachronism: an expansive space on three acres in Queens, where eclectic pursuits will converge to usher in a new era of experimentation, risk and economic sustainability.” – www.knockdowncenter.com
